Situated alongside heavily traveled county roads, Loudoun’s roadside stands provide consumers with a great selection of fresh produce in a convenient location.
Versions of the signs were also developed for strawberry stands in Merced and Sacramento, as well as a general sign for local produce at any farm stand.Signs and safety guidelines were printed with funding from the Western Extension Risk Management Education Center, and Michael Yang distributed large printed versions of the signs to all strawberry stands on the Fresno County Fruit Trail map in Fresno County. What’s involved in setting up a community fruit and vegetable stand?You will need to find a suitable location, build or source a stand and find someone to manage the stand on an on-going basis. Green circles show existing stands and brown circles show stands under construction.If there isn’t already one close by, you may like to set one up.
Can people donate food other than fresh fruit and vegetables?The stands are primarily for fresh fruit and vegetables, as well as eggs, but they can also take small donations of non-perishable foods, such as preserves or canned goods. Their logo can be added to the stand as a way to thank them for their support.Once your stand is built it will appear on the map. It is also a good idea to post about it in the Community Fruit and Vegetable Stand Facebook group.We encourage you to tell all of your neighbours about the stands, either with a letterbox drop or by using your local Facebook groups or Neighbourly. Check out the community fruit and vegetable stands Facebook group for examples of what other stands look like.If you are unable to build your own stand then you may be able to find a local handyman/women, community group or builder to build the stand for you. It should be made with treated wood. It will then be added to the map and you will be sent a sign to add on the stand.Stands should be large, strong and weather-proof to stop the food from getting wet.
